Civil Defence Siren to be officially recognized as historic resource in ceremony

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat will officially dedicate its most recent historic resource Tuesday afternoon.

A plaque will be unveiled to mark the official designation of the city’s last standing Civil Defence Siren as a Municipal Historic Resource. The ceremony begins at 4 p.m.

The siren rests on a work platform on a 15 metre high steel pole. It was one of five sirens installed in the city as a public warning system during the Cold War after the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1961.

A release from the city says the siren is historically significant “as it reflects the fear of nuclear attack at the time of the Cold War after the Second World War.”

The siren is located between Third and Fourth Street Southeast near the Medicine Hat Lawn Bowling Club, across the street from Swirls. It’s the 13th Municipal Historic Resource dedicated in the city.
