Klick registers no-no in Vikings victory over JV Mohawks

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A season debut to remember for Adam Klick and the Crescent Heights Vikings baseball team, no-hitting the Medicine Hat High JV Mohawks on Saturday to wind up their first tournament of the year.

Klick pitched five innings of shutout baseball to earn the no-hitter in a 13-0 drubbing of the Mohawks to wind up their tournament.

Four teams including the Mohawks, Vikings, Foremost Falcons, and Maple Creek Red Sox played in five games to kick off the 2018 spring high school season.

Terek Hieb came through with a pair of RBIs in the first inning to stake Crescent Heights to a 2-0 lead, which remained the score until the fourth inning.

The Vikings jumped on Hat High in the fourth, scoring nine runs to make it an 11-0 contest to take a stranglehold on the game.

After another inning of no-hit baseball, both teams agreed to play a fifth inning to see if Klick could continue his special evening.

Klick was able to get his final three outs in the fifth to secure the no-hitter, something he said he wasn’t aware of until his last trip to the bump.

“I didn’t actually know I had a no-hitter until I actually went out for the last inning there,” said Klick. “I really didn’t think about it, I just went out and threw my pitches, and got the outs.”

Registering six strikeouts on the evening, the Vikings senior also was able to drive in a pair of runs at the dish.

Saturday’s final tournament game was Klick’s first trip to the mound this season and he said it was necessary to throw more breaking balls than usual.

“I had to switch the way I grip the ball because I got a blister on my finger here,” he said. “So, I was starting to throw the change-up a lot more, and just threw it down the middle and got my outs.”

Mohawks starter Kobe Coderre kept Hat High in the game through the fourth inning, allowing four runs while racking up four strikeouts.

He said the team was a bit fatigued in their third game of the day, but added they didn’t execute their game plan at the plate.

“I think we weren’t as aggressive at the plate as we should have been,” said Coderre. “Could have thought more, decided what pitches to hit, and relax up there.”

Crescent Heights moved to a 2-1 record on the season following the Saturday tournament, while the JV Mohawks fell to 1-2.

The Mohawks hit the road for Maple Creek to battle the Red Sox on Monday night, meanwhile the Vikings play host to the Erle Rivers Comets at Athletic Park on Wednesday at 5:30 pm.

In the Tier I league, the Mohawks host the McCoy High Colts on Tuesday night at Athletic Park in an all-Medicine Hat duel.
