MEDICINE HAT, AB — A man charged in connection with a kidnapping in the city’s southwest last year has entered guilty pleas.

Jesse Summers, 35 was scheduled to begin trial in Medicine Hat provincial court on Tuesday, but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of unlawful confinement and assault.

The remaining charges of robbery, escape lawful custody and breach of probation were withdrawn, according to provincial court.

Summers, along with a co-accused, were arrested on November 17, 2016 followed an alleged assault two days earlier.

The pair were accused of allegedly kidnapped and assaulted from a residence in the 500 block of 12 Street SW. The victim was allegedly confronted and assaulted by two males in the home, who prevented him from leaving. Several personal items belonging to the victim were also allegedly stolen from the home.

At one point, the two men allegedly took the man against his will to a rural location, where the assault continued, before being taken back to the residence. The man was able to escape from the home and seek assistance.

Summers was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but with pre-trial custody factored in, it is deemed that he has served his sentence.
