VIOLET GROVE, AB – Recent tragedies across Alberta involving possible carbon monoxide poisonings in idling vehicles has prompted a local technician to provide free exhaust inspections for youth.

Violet Grove resident Jake Ranger says following the deaths of two Drayton Valley teens in an idling vehicle in December and this week’s possible triple carbon monoxide poisoning near Conklin, he felt like opening his shop to give the inspections was the right thing to do.

“I was young once too, I get it. It doesn’t hurt to give up a little free time to check the vehicles out. If you can prevent one death, well that’s something,” said Ranger.

As a father himself the recent events have hit home for him, calling them hard and terrible adding that if his own work can help another family from going through a similar experience it’s worth it.

He normally doesn’t work weekends, but for the next month Ranger will be giving them up to provide the inspections.

“It feels great to help out, and it’s just something simple. I saw some posts of people saying I’m a hero, I’m not a hero. I’m just trying to help.”

Ranger added the inspection is simple and quick, and urges if any parents have concerns with their kids vehicles exhaust system to bring them in.

“It doesn’t matter if it is a a one year old vehicle. If they run off and hit the ditch, you can break things, you can bend things. Any leaks, rust or anything where exhuast could get in it needs to be addressed.”

Any parents who would like to have their children’s vehicle’s inspected can contact Jake’s Automotive at 780-514-7371.
