BASSANO, AB – The westbound Trans-Canada Highway is closed near Bassano due to a motor vehicle collision involving a car and a semi Friday night.

According to Constable Krzysztof Noel with the Bassano RCMP, officers were called out to the scene at approximately 5 p.m. Friday night to the highway near the Esso Station in Bassano. According to Noel, a Honda Civic carrying two people was driving west on and signaled to turn right, but then quickly signalled to turn left, crossed traffic and was struck by a semi carrying two trailers also travelling west.

The driver of the Honda suffered “significant” injuries, said Noel, and was transported to a Calgary hospital. A passenger was also in the vehicle at the time, but an update on their condition was not yet known.

The driver of the semi suffered minor injuries, says Noel.

As of 10 p.m., the westbound highway remains closed, with drivers being detoured through the town. Noel says one of the trailers flipped across both lanes of the highway, and crews are working to remove it from the scene. They anticipate the road will reopen within another hour.
