Darts players team up for Medicine Hat Mixed Doubles Tournament

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Darts is usually an individual sport, but on Saturday it was teamwork and communication showcased at the Royal Canadian Legion.

The city’s annual Mixed Doubles Tournament was held, showcasing some of the best darts players from southeastern Alberta.

Hosted by the Medicine Hat Darts League, a total of 19 teams took part in the day-long tournament.

That number is down from previous years however, as the league is looking at ways to increase membership for both league play and tournaments in 2018.

Tournament Director Peggy Smith said joining the league can be a big step for some.

“They’re a bit intimidated I think, and they feel that the same people always win,” said Smith. “At one time I felt that way too, and then I was told by someone, ‘You’re never going to get any better if you don’t play.’ And, that’s true.”

Along with the competitors, a number of junior players were on hand to assist with scoring on Saturday afternoon.

Medicine Hat’s youth league has seen steady growth over the last few years, highlighted by local product Dawson Murschell turning pro in Europe.

League member and local coach Rob Kochie said they’re hoping to attract more of these young darts players to fill some of the openings in the league.

“We’ve had a tough struggle for the last five or 10 years to get people out,” said Kochie. “It’s maybe because the old generation is not around anymore, so we’re trying to encourage the new generation, hence the youth.”

The Medicine Hat Darts League is planning on hosting at least two more tournaments before the end of the season, including the Novice Doubles Tournament in late January.
