Meet the Candidate: Maureen Roberts

Oct 14, 2017 | 6:44 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Maureen Roberts says it’s now time for her to help enhance and improve the community she calls home.

Roberts is one of 19 candidates seeking a spot on city council in the 2017 civic election.

“I’m running because I believe it’s important to give back,” she said in an email. “I’m committed to serve and do my best to ensure Medicine Hat continues to be the best place to live, work, and play.”

Roberts has worked as a landscaper for the past several years and also managed the Rite Downtown Garden Centre. She has sat on the Urban Environment and Recreation Advisory board, as well as the City Centre Development Agency boards.

She says improving the city’s economic situation is the biggest issue for the next council.

“Over the next four years, I would encourage and support the need to reduce spending on non-essential expenditures, plan for the next round of union contracts and assist in planning for the future,” she said.

Roberts says being non-partisan, positive and believing in “move forward governance” sets her apart from the other 19 candidates. She adds if elected, her first priority is “to listen, research and consider all stakeholders.”

Roberts announced her candidacy in August. She is the daughter of former mayor Ted Grimm, who served from 1980-2001. When she announced her candidacy for council, she said strong and fair leadership, along with listening to the concerns of all citizens, were the most important lessons she learned from him.

The election is October 16.
