Police reminding public to keep vehicles safe after recent thefts
MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service is reminding the public to make sure they don’t leave valuables in their vehicles and their cars remain locked after a rash of car thefts in the city in the past month.
Between June 1 and July 25, a total of 43 vehicles, including ATVs and motorcycles, have been reported stolen to the police. Of the stolen vehicles, only nine were properly secured with windows rolled up and the doors lock. According to police, the remaining 34 vehicles were left unlocked, with several of the cars left running or having the keys readily available.
This week, police responded to three reports of stolen vehicles around the city. Sunday night, police observed a Kia Soul which had been reported stolen earlier during the day, on North Railway Street. The occupants of the car, a man and a woman, fled from the car on foot once they saw police. The two were arrested Monday on charges of breach of recognizance and possession of stolen property over $5,000. The vehicle’s estimated value is $8,000.
Also on Monday, police stopped a Ford Focus on Maple Avenue at 6:40 p.m. which had been reported stolen one day earlier. An occupant of the vehicle was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and breach of recognizance.
