Mavericks respond in rematch Sunday versus Regina

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The sting of Saturday night’s 14-2 loss to Regina didn’t seem to affect the Medicine Hat Mavericks on Sunday, defeating the Red Sox 2-1 in the rematch.

Starting pitcher Aaron Garner continued his strong play of late, pitching a 0-0 game until the top of the third inning.

Regina’s Jordan Schulz crossed home plate following a wild pitch from Garner and giving the Red Sox the opening score for the second straight game.

Bottom of the fifth inning with the score still 1-0 for the Red Sox, a double from Louie Canjura gave Jaxson Hooge the green light from second base and tied the game at 1-1.

Some clutch hitting for the Mavericks in the seventh inning, as Caleb Longley lived up to his last name with his fifth home run of the season to give Medicine Hat their first lead 2-1.

Longley now sits one home run back of the WMBL lead, and sits first on the Mavericks this year in the category.

Relief pitchers Will Ziebol and Michael Carr came in to finish off the contest, with the Mavericks getting back in the win column with a 2-1 victory on Sunday.

Regina actually outhit the Mavericks 7-5, as Longley, Canjura, Hooge, and Colton Wright were the only Medicine Hat batters to pick up hits.

Garner was pulled after six innings of work on Sunday, striking out four while allowing one earned run on five hits against.

The Mavs have now moved back to two games above .500, but still trail the Edmonton Prospects for third place in the Western Division.

A lengthy break by WMBL standards this week for Medicine Hat, as they are now off for three days before hosting the Prospects at Athletic Park on Wednesday night.

Game time between Medicine Hat and Edmonton is set for 7:05 pm.
