MEDICINE HAT, AB – Lacrosse teams from across the Prairies were in Medicine Hat over the weekend for a three-day tournament celebrating the sport.

‘Lax to the Max’ was held at three locations across the city, the Kinplex and Medicine Hat Arena for the older kids and the newly formed tyke age group suited up at the Family Leisure Centre.

On Saturday, the Medicine Hat Sun Devils faced off against their rivals in the Brooks Drillers.

Sun Devils Assistant Coach Ryan Pinter said the team helped each other on the floor and enjoyed the fast-paced action.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Pinter. “The kids worked hard and were running. They all came off smiling and happy, and that’s all that matters.”

It was a tight battle between Medicine Hat and Brooks, with the Sun Devils scoring the winning goal in the dying minutes of the second half for a 2-1 victory.

The tykes age group includes kids as young as five-years-old, and is a great introduction to the sport according to Pinter.

“The kids were all excited on the bench and the kids that scored were happy,” he said. “It’s not about winning at this age, it’s about having lots of fun and enjoying lacrosse.”

This year’s edition of Lax to the Max was the most successful in the event’s history, with close to 40 teams playing for division titles.

Pinter added while the competition at the tykes age isn’t there yet, it’s fantastic to see teams from across Alberta and Saskatchewan take part.

“I know my son personally, he enjoys playing against another team,” he said. “We tell him they’re from another city and he goes, ‘really?’ He doesn’t really understand it yet, but he’ll understand the competition that will grow throughout the years, and hopefully it’s a good rivalry to come.”

In the bantam division, Medicine Hat (Ertmoed) took home the title with a 7-6 victory over Medicine Hat (Drefs), while the Regina Snipers won the bronze medal.

The Moose Jaw Mustangs picked up the novice division championship over Standing Buffalo 7-6, with Regina getting another third place finish.

Standing Buffalo were 9-6 winners over the Rockyview Rage in the midget championship game, with the Calgary Sabercats (Darrell) getting third.

And in the peewee division, the Calgary Sabercats took home the gold with a 6-4 win over Medicine Hat (Bower), third place was won by Medicine Hat (Eakins).
