City crews repairing sinkhole near downtown intersection

MEDICINE HAT, AB — City crews were forced to tape off part of an intersection downtown after a sinkhole formed late Monday night.

Crews could be seen working at Fourth Street and Sixth Avenue downtown, near the offices of the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce, on Tuesday to repair the damage.

A city employee noticed the sinkhole on Monday. Traffic was reduced to one lane as crews repaired the hole.

According to the city, the hole was caused by old storm sewer infrastructure that collapsed.

Due to the high chance of rain Tuesday night and into Wednesday, the city has back filled the hole until the weather improves.

Thursday the rain is expected to clear up and the work is expected to continue which will likely include a full road closure as workers repair the infrastructure.

The road will likely be repaved after that.
