Igloos, Planes and Bathrooms – huh??

Last week after the radio show, I went the station gym. Fellow Corus host Geoff Currier joined me and as you can imagine there wasn’t too much dead air in the little gym with the two of us yappers in there.  The interesting part is not what happened in the gym but afterward as we were in our respective change rooms.

As I was changing, my back suddenly gave out. An awful spasm shot down my spine and I screamed in pain and collapsed onto the floor. As I struggled to pull myself together, I let out various screams and squeals as I breathed through the pain to get myself upright.  I was relieved to know that Geoff was close by, and that I wasn’t alone like I usually am in the secluded gym. But Geoff didn’t come.  He didn’t knock on the door to see if I was okay. Maybe he was already gone, or maybe he couldn’t hear me through the walls, I thought.

Later when I saw Geoff, I asked him if he heard me in the change room. “Yeah, I didn’t know if you were doing voice exercises or if you were hurt.” he said.

Voice exercises??  Ah, no, I certainly wasn’t doing voice exercises in the women’s change room.

So my question to Geoff, who is clearly a very smart, savvy and intelligent man, is that if it crossed your mind that my ‘voice exercises’ were being done because I was hurt, why did you not check in on me to see if I was?

Now the poor guy was full of apologies and offers to help when he did learn what was going on, but I still think that there is a lot of learning to be had here.

How many times do many of us stand by, even though perhaps our gut is wondering if we should help or check out the situation or do something about it?  My answer is quite a few, I know I certainly have. We don’t want to look foolish, we don’t want to embarrass ourselves or the other person, we might be wrong after all.

The week, I want to encourage you to step up – even if you might be wrong, even if it might be a little embarrassing. Ask the question, see if you can help, push the envelop a bit and see if your gut is right.

Geoff and I discuss the incident with loads of laughter and learning on this week’s show.

I also spoke with Dr. Jill Oakes from the University of Manitoba’s Dept. of Environment and Geography, her  research areas are artic people and aviation -what an interesting and inspiring woman. Listen in to find out about our 50 below zero, sleeping in an igloo experience and how the women in your life can have an amazing experience in the aviation for little to no money.

The whole show is podcasted here for your listening pleasure.  Your LIfe, Unlimited with Stephanie Staples, Jill Oakes and Geoff Currier

Enjoy, enjoy!
