Life Lists – Inspiration and Beyond

What the strangest reason for a party you have ever had (or been to)?

(If you’d rather listen than read, the radio podcast is here: CJOB Sept. 1, 2013 Life/Bucket Lists)

My sister just started selling home party jewelry and although it’s not my thing at all I wanted to have a party to help her out. In an effort to make it more fun (for me!) I decided to call it a Bucket List/Jewelry Party and my thoughts were that after her presentation we would help each other create our individual bucket lists using the book, Create Your Own Bucket List – How to Design Yours Before You Kick It.

It was such a great success that I wanted to tell you about it in case it may spur you on to have your own Bucket List Party (no jewelry required).

We started by having each of the ten women share something cool that they have done in the past that someone else may want to add to their list. This would be our Success List!

It was fascinating how people really downplayed what they had done and preceded their statements with ‘just’ and ‘only’ – it seems our perceptions of what we’ve done doesn’t always match other’s perceptions.

In our group one woman had been to The Ellen Show, one had walked with the tigers in Africa, one had grown asparagus (which apparently is a very hard thing to do). One woman shared that she had on her bucket list ‘to raise two contributing members of society’ and on this day she felt she could stroke it off because  her one son was a police officer and the other began training this week to be a nurse.  So inspiring.

The book itself gave lively examples and provocative questions to ask and it spurred on such great discussions and gave us ideas as a group that we may not have thought of individually.

This party was another example of how a group of minds can work together to create something even more powerful than we can create on our own.

Quite a few questions came out throughout the evening as well:

  1. Should a bucket list be attainable things or crazy, unlikely to do things
  2. Should it be things you want to do, things you should do, things you will be will be disappointed if you don’t do…
  3. Should the bucket list be…

I a certainly not an expert on Bucket Lists here’s my 2 cents, if you are interested.

It’s yours – it can and should be whatever you want it to be.

It should make you happy when you look at it.

It should not be a static document, it should be ever changing, ever evolving, growing as you grow.

It should consist mostly of things that are within your control, (sure – go ahead put be a grandparent on the list!).

Having the list, in fact just the act of creating the list can cause you to be more open-minded, more in tune to opportunities, more likely to see things that may have gone under the radar before.

I highly recommend having a Bucket List Party,  use the book, a simple Google search or your own brilliant minds to get the list going.

The people that will be attracted to such a party will be the type of people that you will want to spend more time with, there will be lots of laughing and energy in the room  – in fact there was so much electricity going through at  the house we actually blew a fuse – true story!

The party inspired this week’s radio show with my guests, extreme athlete Ryan Anderson – and explorer  Paul Frazer  – both inspiring men with much to say on the subject of achieving great goals.

Paul has a template for creating a Life List to share with you, it’s a smart way to begin – if you don’t know where to start!
