Who isn’t interested in making relationships better? My conversation with Executive Coach Steve Lishansky on Your Life, Unlimited radio proves it doesn’t have to be that hard.

High Value Relationship Rule #1

Anyone who cares about the value, impact, and meaningful results in their professional – and every other – relationship has to know and understand Rule #1.  This common sense, always true, and powerfully effective Rule #1 goes like this:  Being Right Is Insufficient for Being Effective!

As if you need any additional proof of this, I always follow up with this:  Everyone who is married knows what I am talking about!  In fact everyone who has any professional or personal relationships that matter can tell from their own experience that this is true.

What does work exceptionally well, if being right is not the “key to the kingdom?”  There is almost nothing that is as important or powerful for being effective as helping your client determine what is important, meaningful, and valuable.  Again and again we have to remind ourselves that what clients first ask for is almost never what is ultimately most important to them at the level of results and impact in their business.

The fastest way to get to this level of influence, impact and importance in each and every project, each and every meeting, is to facilitate their clarity about “What Is Most Important.” You’ve got to help them get to what is most important or you are not going to truly support their greater success. The more you help them keep the focus on what is most important, the more powerful every one of your conversations – and professional relationships – is going to be.

Let’s also remember – this is such a fundamental principle of success that it works everywhere, and all the time.  It works at home. It works with your friends. It works with colleagues. It works with anybody who really wants a level of impact and results in any important area. What is most important – but usually not clear initially – is what they will value the most. Your ability to help them define this is an enormous gift  – and demonstration of the value you can deliver for them – that you can give to anybody, at any time.  When you are giving your clients or prospects this kind of value before they have even committed to you, what does that do for your credibility, and level of trust and potential already demonstrated in the relationship?

Developing a high level of trust and respect, where they know you understand what is most important to them – because you helped them get there – creates an exceptional foundation to build upon.  It demonstrates that they can trust you at the level of thinking and planning, not just at the level of execution.  This is key if you are going to become an indispensable partner in their success, not just a transactional vendor.

Learn to facilitate that  level of clarity about what is most important, and your path to becoming their indispensable partner in success just got much shorter – and much faster.

You can be a force for greater clarity, focus and impact on what is most important!

Until next time, Steve Lishansky
