MEDICINE HAT, AB — A business which operates out of the Medicine Hat Regional Airport has found other arrangements to keep running while the airport runway is closed starting next week.

Super T Aviation, which offers pilot training and flights, will be shifting its flight operations to a satellite school running on the Bow Island Airport.

“We will be going to Bow Island for the duration, however long that might be, up to two months is what we have permission to do,” said Terri Super, owner of the company.

The company applied to Transport Canada to operate the school, and will be moving its planes to Bow Island this weekend. Staff and instructors will be staying at a campground in Super T will continue to offer ground training for pilots at the Medicine Hat office, teaching aspiring pilots about meteorology and navigation, among other subjects.

Planes will be unable to take off or land at the Medicine Hat Regional Airport while runway rehabilitation is ongoing. Super estimates not being able to fly out of Medicine Hat will between $150,000 and $200,000 by the end of May.

“There will be a decline in the number of students we’re able to train, because not all of them will want to drive out to Bow Island to do the training,” she said, noting she estimates it will cost the company between $150,000 and $200,000 for the month.

Super says the company did try and reach out to the city for relief for businesses impacted by the airport closure, but she says nothing has been promised from the city.

“I think there should be some compensation,” she said. “It’s not like closing a street downtown, you’re totally blocking us from doing any sort of flying business in Medicine Hat.”

The runway project is scheduled to be finished by May 31 and Super says she’s hoping the project will finish on time.
