MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat says the water is safe to drink despite discolouration reported in some homes

According to Brian Murphy, with the City of Medicine Hat, it’s the turbidity of the South Saskatchewan River from fast runoff and spring melt is the reason behind the colour change.

“There is a slight discoloration to the water,” he said. “The water is safe, it’s completely treated and meets all standards.”

Murphy said the Water treatment Plant has adjusted it’s testing to respond to the discoloration of the water.

“It’s thoroughly treated,” he said. “The water treatment plant has adjusted processes to adapt to the higher turbidity in the river water and it remains safe to drink.”

Murphy says potable water is regularly tested before it enters the distribution system.

“The treated water in the city system meets all Canadian Drinking Water Standards and Alberta Environment Standards,” he said.
