Alberta Education seeking feedback on student transportation changes

Apr 22, 2018 | 7:42 AM

EDMONTON — Alberta Education is looking for feedback from residents about potential changes to student transportation eligibility criteria.

The survey, which launched today, is asking for input to determine potential changes to the distance criteria, mandated service levels, and what safety considerations should be considered.

“We are looking forward to hearing from Albertans on this important topic,” said Education Minister David Eggen in a news release. “Making sure students are transported to school and back home safely each day is an extremely important yet complicated task that involves a number of organizations. We want to know Albertans’ views on how to make this process the best it can be.”

The ministry says progress has already been made to understand transportation challenges in Alberta, but are looking for more feedback from parents, school authorities and stakeholders.

“Student safety is paramount to parents across Alberta, and we appreciate the opportunity to provide input on the rules before they come into play,” said Allison Pike, president of Alberta School Councils’ Association in a news release. “We look forward to working with Alberta Education to ensure parents’ voices are heard and the new transportation rules will work for Alberta families.”

The survey, located here, will close on June 15 . The changes are scheduled to be finalized by government in fall 2018, with the new requirements being implemented in time for the 2019-2020 school year.
