City warns residents to stay away from Seven Persons Creek due to high flow levels

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat residents are being reminded to exercise caution around Seven Persons Creek due to high flow levels in the coming days.

The increased flow is a result of efforts to manage reservoir and waterway levels in the surrounding area by St. Mary’s River Irrigation District, which includes increasing flow from the Murray Reservoir. As a result of this Seven Persons Creek will likely see water levels near or at bank full levels.

The city says the fast moving water can cause erosion and the collapse of river banks, and says residents should remain a safe distance from the banks of any waterways. Residents are also encouraged to keep children and pets away from waterways.

Seven Persons creek runs through Cottonwood and Paradise Valley Golf Courses, Saamis Archaeological Site, Kin Coulee Park and Saratoga Dog Park before merging with Ross Creek and flowing into the South Saskatchewan River.

According to Alberta River Basins, as of 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday, a flow rate of 0.723 cubic metres per second was recorded in the creek. On Thursday, the flow rate was 0.524 cubic metres per second at 4:40 p.m.
