MEDICINE HAT, AB — Students from across southern Alberta busted out the birdies at Notre Dame Academy this weekend.

The Mega Tournament hosted by St. Mary’s School and Notre Dame featured approximately 700 badminton players from across the province, with athletes from Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Brooks and Irvine all finding the podium.

Notre Dame ended up as the aggregate champions by the end of the event, winning five gold medals.

“It’s awesome,” said Roman Cherniak, a Grade 8 student at the school. “Playing with the home team at this and doing really well is good.”

Naomi Schick, a Grade 9 student at Schuler School, was one of the students who participated in this weekend’s tournament.

“It’s exciting, but it’s kind of nerve-wracking too, because you’re not sure how you’re going to do,” she said.

Schick needed extra points to win a quarter-final match up in her division during the event.

Medicine Hat will play host to Junior High Badminton Zones on April 28, with games scheduled at Medicine Hat High School, Notre Dame Academy and Crescent Heights High School.
