Governments of Canada and Alberta announce new three-year funding for child care investments
EDMONTON — The federal and provincial government have announced a three-year bilateral agreement for early learning and child care investments.
The agreement allocates $136 million for Alberta over the next three years, which will focus on increasing access to quality, affordable, flexible and inclusive child care.
“The development of early learning and child care systems is one of the best investments our government is making to strengthen Canadian families, society and the economy,” said Jean-Yves Duclos, Federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development in a news release. “Through the agreement signed with the Government of Alberta, we will be able to better support parents, families and communities in their efforts to build high-quality, inclusive and affordable early learning and child care.”
Last year, Alberta launched 22 pilot early learning and childcare centres which had a maximum fee of $25 per day. With the new funding, up to 78 additional centres will be launched across the province, though information about location was not immediately known.
