MEDICINE HAT, AB — In Medicine Hat, and across the country, many people are wearing jerseys in support of those killed and injured following the Humboldt Broncos bus collision last Friday.

Jersey Day was organized by a group of hockey mothers in British Columbia, and sees Canadians of all ages wearing sports jerseys to show support and solidarity for the team.

Dr. Ken Sauer School in Medicine Hat was among those involved in the event, with students and staff wearing jerseys from every sport to school.

“I think the hope is that it’s building an understanding of community among the kids,” said Principal Jason Peters. “This is a horrific accident that happened and we want to honour the memories of that and help the kids process that a bit, and to understand and do some small thing as a way of honouring them.

“Many of us don’t know them personally, but as it seems, people aren’t far removed from people that do, so it’s hit home for a lot of people.”

Peters says in the week since the crash, teachers have been talking with their students about what happened and answered questions about the tragedy. The tragedy was discussed during an assembly at the school, mentioned on announcements, and teachers have discussed it in the classroom.

“Kids will wonder, and have questions, so it’s really important that we help them have an opportunity to think about it, reflect on it, ask questions,” he said. “It shows how precious life is, and see how do we make commitments to build community for all of us here.”

Peters says he wants students to be able to share their feelings and talk about how a tragic incident affects them.

“It’s important to process it, and to know that if they want someone to talk to, that there’s people available,” he said.
