MEDICINE HAT, AB — David Quenneville is officially a professional hockey player.

The Medicine Hat Tigers defenceman has signed a three-year entry-level deal with the New York Islanders, who drafted him in 2016.

“It feels incredible,” said Quenneville. “It’s the second step after getting drafted, obviously, to become a professional hockey player but at the same time, it starts here in Medicine Hat.

“To be able to wear the black and orange for the past four years for this wonderful organization, and to have the support of Darrell and Brent (Maser) and Shaun (Clouston) and everyone in the community, it’s where it starts from.”

Quenneville led all defencemen in scoring in the regular season with 80 points (26 goals, 54 assists).

He will be reporting to the Bridgeport Tigers, the Islanders’ AHL affiliate.

During the WHL playoffs, the Edmonton product record eight points in six games (1 goal, 7 assists).

Quenneville still has one year of eligibility left in the Western Hockey League, but with a professional contract signed, he might not be back with the Tigers next season. He says if he doesn’t return to the team, he still has a lot of positive memories of his time in Medicine Hat.

“I’ve been able to wear this uniform and these colours for four years, and they’ve been the best four years of my life,” he said. “I’m just so grateful from top-to-bottom, the ownership, the people in the front office, to be able to play in front of them every night and have their support.

“If it is the last time, it’s obviously bittersweet, but as the boys say, ‘Tigers Forever.’”
