MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat and District Food Bank will benefit from a large donation by South County Co-op.

The grocery chain donated more than 140 cases of turkeys to the Food Bank Wednesday morning.

“We’re so thankful to South Country Co-op to take on this initiative to ensure our families are receiving meat year-round,” said Tammy Vanderloh, co-executive director of the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank.

The estimated dollar value of the turkeys is $8,500.

Vanderloh says a lot of their frozen food comes from donations from grocery stores such as Co-op.

Wednesday’s donation will be put towards the Community Kitchen program, which teaches families to cook and preserve healthy, low-cost meals, says Vanderloh.

“We’re working really closely with 10 individual families,” she said. “It’s our Food First program. Right now, all of our community kitchens will be centered around how to work with turkey.”

Vanderloh says the Food Bank is currently helping between 40 and 80 families per day.
