RED DEER, AB ā€“ For the first time ever, two Medicine Hat sledge hockey teams are going for gold at the Matt Cook Memorial Cup tournament in Red Deer.

With 26 players on their roster, the Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport Society was able to split their team in half and send two squads for the western Canada tournament.

In their first game on Friday, the Medicine Hat Hounds 1 squad beat out the Edmonton Impact 3-2 to move to a 1-0 record.

Lealand Nickerson of the Hounds earned player of the game honours in the win.

Meanwhile, it was a defensive battle between the Medicine Hat Hounds 2 team and the BC Sledge Hawks, but the Hounds came out on the short end of a 1-0 loss.

Netminder Vince Paiement had a great game despite the loss, stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced to take home Hounds player of the game.

Round-robin play in the Intermediate ā€˜Cā€™ division continues on Saturday for the Hounds, as Team 1 faces off against the Ice Tornadoes, while Team 2 lines up with the Calgary Stingers.

On Saturday night, the Team 1 Hounds wind up the round-robin against GP/Lethbridge, which is preceded by the Team 2 Hounds hitting the ice against the PSA Dogs.

Medal games will be held on Sunday afternoon in Red Deer.
