Tigers dominate Wheat Kings, take 1-0 series lead

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Tigers came out swinging to begin the Western Hockey League playoffs Friday night.

Bolstered by a pair of power play goals from Ryan Jevne and Mark Rassell, the Tigers downed the Brandon Wheat Kings 7-2 in front of a hot crowd at the Canalta Centre to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

In addition to Jevne and Rassell, Kristians Rubins, Cole Clayton, Ryan Chyzowski, Bryan Lockner and Gary Haden all found the back of the net during the game. Rubins also finished the game with two assists.

Jordan Hollett made 32 saves for the win in net.

James Shearer and Luka Burzan had the lone goals for the Wheat Kings. Goaltender Logan Thompson played for 21 minutes and let in six goals on 18 shots, with Dylan Myskiw taking over in net halfway through the second period. Myskiw made six saves on the seven shots he faced.

The Tigers, however, lost two defencemen during the game. Dylan MacPherson and Linus Nassen both left the game due to injuries. They will be evaluated on Saturday.

Game 2 takes place Sunday at the Canalta Centre, with the puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m.
