BROOKS, AB — Brooks RCMP are again reminding drivers to travel with caution after a pair of collisions on the Trans-Canada Highway Wednesday morning.

According to RCMP, at around 9 a.m., officers responded to a collision in the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway at Highway 36, west of Brooks. According to Corporal Rob Harms, a semi truck hauling hay bales travelling north was struck by a flatbed tow truck and an oil tanker as it tried to cross the highway.

Nobody was injured in the collision, and the intersection was blocked for an hour as crews cleaned up the scene.

Harms said while crews were on scene, a second collision took place one kilometre west of the intersection. The second collision happened at approximately 9:30 a.m. A semi-truck hauling groceries hit the stationary traffic, striking a semi truck which was pushed into a minivan and car. A passenger in one of the semi trucks was transported to hospital by ground EMS with undetermined, but serious injuries, says Harms.

Three people were also taken to hospital with minor injuries following the second collision. It took approximately two hours to clear the scene.

Harms says heavy fog was a factor in both collisions.

“Drivers have to be mindful when it’s foggy like that,” he said. “It might not be in their best interest to be driving. In the last couple collisions we’ve seen, visibility was near zero, yet we had people driving on the highway.

“The one must is that people must drive to the road and weather conditions. We’ve seen many vehicles that were travelling at highway speeds in areas where there was near zero visibility. When we have vehicles doing that, often that’s going to end in some type of collision.”
