Kwahommies reflect on high school careers after exit at provincials

MEDICINE HAT, AB – An emotional day for graduating members of the Medicine Hat High Kwahommies varsity basketball team, as they ended their high school careers in front of friends and family.

The Kwahommies were matched up against the Leduc High Tigers in the 11th place game at 4A provincials on Saturday, with both sides knowing it was their final game of the season.

Leduc built up a 36-21 lead at the half which was ultimately too much for Kwahommies, falling by an 80-65 final score to wind up their tournament.

Kwahommies senior guard Rhiannon Ware led the offence once again in her final appearance in a Medicine Hat High uniform.

She said it’s been a special three years and will look back on her time with the Kwahommies fondly.

“It’s where I grew up, it gave me so many opportunities,” said Ware. “Now I get to go to the next level for this sport because not only my teammates, but my coaches, everyone was so great to me and I can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done for me over the years.”

Ware will be sticking around Medicine Hat next fall, as she is expected to sign a contract with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in the coming days.

The Kwahommies will be graduating one other Grade 12 student in Bretonnie Stenhouse, but her final game came on February 28 in Taber.

In an 81-79 loss to the W.R. Myers Rebels, Stenhouse suffered a concussion that sidelined her for the rest of her senior year.

Stenhouse said it was a tough pill to swallow not being able to take part in the provincial tournament, but tried to keep her team motivated on the sidelines.

“It really sucked not being able to play on the floor with my teammates for my final year,” said Stenhouse. “But, they did super good out there and I’m so proud of them.”

With potentially 11 returning players for next season, the Kwahommies are hoping to use their experience as provincial hosts to gain more ground in league play in 2018-19.

Stenhouse, who will be attending university in Saskatchewan in the fall, added her time with teammates at Hat High has been life-changing.

“They’ve been there for me through everything that I’ve been through in my life,” she said. “They’re just like a band of sisters that I would never have. The past ones have gone, but each year I’ve got new girls to bring into my little family.”

The Centennial High Coyotes were victorious in the 4A girls final on Saturday, besting the Bishop Carroll Cardinals by a 67-60 final score.
