MEDICINE HAT, AB. – The Medicine Hat Police Service has been charged a Gr. 10 student for allegedly uttering threats against other students and a school resource officer.

Inspector Tim McGough said Police received a phone call from the Massachusetts State Police in February regarding the threats made online.

“A high school student was making threats online with another gamer,” he said. “The gamer in Massachusetts found it necessary to inform the police.”

The Medicine Hat student reportedly told the Massachusetts gamer that he wanted to stab his school resource officer in the neck when his back was turned, then grab his gun and kill as many students as possible.

McGough said the Medicine Hat Police Service immediately investigated the teen’s threats.

“The individual was arrested for making those threats to the officer,” he said. “He was charged with uttering threats and consequently he is undergoing a psychiatric assessment.”

McGough said these types of threats against students are not common, however, if they are reported to police, they take them very seriously.

“Even though somebody may not intend to carry through on that threat, the fact that you made a threat against somebody to cause harm is a criminal offence and we have to act accordingly,” he said.

The student, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, remains in custody.
