Pats score late to sink Tigers 6-3

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A trio of late Regina Pats goals halted the Medicine Hat Tigers short-lived win streak with a thud Tuesday night.

Three late sinkers, including Koby Morrisseau’s second of the game, led the visiting Pats to a 6-3 victory over the Tabbies in front of 2878 at the Canalta Centre.

The loss snaps Medicine Hat’s win streak at three games, and goaltender Michael Bullion’s personal stretch of six wins in a row.

Bullion made 23 saves in his first loss since February 16th in Swift Current.

Jesse Gabrielle, Emil Oksanen, Libor Hajek, and Josh Mahura also scored for the Pats, who clinched the season series 3-games-to-1 over the Tabbies. Goaltender Max Paddock made 24 saves in the victory.

Tyler Preziuso, rookie Henry Rybinski, and captain Mark Russell each scored for Medicine Hat, which has its point-streak ended at seven games.

Both teams traded blows in the opening 20 minutes. Jesse Gabrielle opened the scoring 2:05 into the contest with Robbie Holmes taking credit for the lone assist.

Tyler Prezuiso and Henry Rybinski tacked on markers less than a minute apart approaching the midway mark of the opening period. But with just 15.9 seconds left, Koby Morrisseau squared the contest at 2-2 with his fourth of the season.

Hayden Ostir collected the primary helper on Rybinski’s goal — his fifth point since returning exactly one week ago in Edmonton. The 19-year-old from Winnipeg, MB suffered a broken finger prior to the Christmas break, forcing him to miss a significant chunk of the season.

Regina stormed out of the gate in the second period. Although shots on Bullion were hard to come by, their offensive-zone presence resulted in Tigers defenceman Kristians Rubins taking a high-sticking minor. Emil Oksanen scored with the Latvian watching from the box 4:12 into the frame to make it 3-2.

Medicine Hat weathered the Pats for the next 10 minutes, and received a fortuitous break following a timeout late in the period. Cameron Hebig appeared to give Regina a 4-2 lead after deflecting a rebound into an empty cage behind Bullion. But after a lengthy review by the officials, the goal was called back on a count of illegal puck contact.

On the ensuing face-off in the Tigers zone, Medicine Hat broke out on an odd-man rush. Mark Russell whacked in a loose rebound, his 49th of the campaign to lock the game at 3-3 after 40 minute of play. Bryan Lockner and Dave Quenneville took the assists on the play.

Libor Hajek notched the game winning goal on the power play with less than five minutes to play, snapping a low shot passed a screened Bullion. Morrisseau followed suit with his second of the night 35 seconds later, stunning the Tigers. Josh Mahura’s tally came with under three minutes to play to round out the scoring 6-3.

Medicine Hat returns to action on Friday, hosting the Edmonton Oil Kings (7:30 p.m.).
