MEDICINE HAT, AB — Firefighters in Medicine Hat braved the cold and snow for a good cause this weekend.

A few local firefighters camped out on the roof of the Maple Avenue Fire Station from noon on Friday until noon on Sunday for their annual Rooftop Campout.

BJ Lang was one of the firefighters scaling the rooftop to wave at passing cars for the departments fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada. Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder that weakens the body’s muscles.

“We’ve been doing it now for 8 years in our department,” he said. “Just seeing our community come out and donate shows why I am a firefighter in Medicine Hat.”

Lang said they unofficially raised $17,978 for muscular dystrophy this year and he is extremely proud of Medicine Hat.

“We are just standing up on the roof top doing nothing,” he said. “It’s the people coming here and making the effort to go to the bank and come back.”

Despite the temperatures dropping down to minus 25 on Sunday, Lang said they are already looking forward to next years event.
