MEDICINE HAT, AB — The second phase of renovations at the Medicine Hat Mall is well underway.

The mall opened its first phase last August with a new food court and several new stores, and work has now shifted to the area where the food court was previously located.

Crews are working on a new entrance to the mall and retail space in the section, and general manager Richard Okrainec says getting the new phase and entrance finished remains the top priority.

“The first thing that we want to do is get the entrance open,” he said. “That’s really been an inconvenience for the 18 months we’ve been doing construction now, as this was our main entrance way, but it’s been closed off for a long period of time, and of course the construction site is there.

“We’re hoping to have the new entrance way open in around late summer, and have the tenants open by the end of the year.”

The newly renovated space will have room for seven tenants. Okrainec says negotiations are underway for businesses to set up shop in the space, but couldn’t speak about specifics.

Okrainec adds the Cinescape Arcade at Galaxy Cinemas is still under construction, and they hope to have it open in a month.

Okrainec adds the mall has recently received control of the former Sears location and is preparing the space for a full redevelopment, with the goal of completing renovations between 18 months and two years.

“It’s going to -other than the food court part – look much the same as what the new area is phase one is,” he said, adding there could be between two and four major tenants in the space.
