MEDICINE HAT, AB – Cheryl Hart is an aunt, fiancée and social worker, she is also battling terminal cancer.

In 2015, Hart was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, a type of skin cancer that migrates into the body and develops tumours. This past July, she was given just 6 months to live as an inoperable tumour had developed on her right hip.

“I asked what other options do I have,” she said. “ I was told they would keep me comfortable until I died.”

That answer did not sit well with Hart, she wants more time to spend with her family, friends and to enjoy life.

“There are all sorts of programs and clinics other than in Canada, but the expense is just so high,” she said.

Hart found a hospital in Mexico, called CHIPSA willing to try an experimental treatment and vaccine.

“They have a vaccine that’s in its third study and showing positive results for Squamous Cell Carcinoma,” she said. “I can get that vaccine in Mexico but I can’t get it here.”

The cost of the treatment is over $33,000 U.S. and Hart is determined to raise the money for the potentially life saving treatment before the March 22nd admission date.

“I have an incredible family and partner,” she said. “We just keep believing that something can take place that will put my cancer into remission or just give me time.”

Hart has been creating and selling homemade wreaths to help fund her treatment and a Go Fund Me page has also been started. A public fundraiser is being held at the Silver Buckle on March 15th to help Hart meet her goal.
