LETHBRIDGE – A train derailment on Crowsnest Trail around 5:15 Monday (Feb. 26) afternoon brought a call from Lethbridge Police asking motorists to avoid the area.

Officers and multiple fire crews were dispatched to the scene to assess the situation.

The derailment happened at 17 Street, directly beneath the foot bridge that crosses over the highway.

Police noted that eastbound traffic on Crowsnest Trail was diverted at Stafford Drive.

There was no immediate word on the cause or a damage estimate. However, one of the rail-cars hit the northwest corner of the Sik-Ooh-Kotoki Friendship Society building.  Fortunately, fire crews on scene say they do not believe anyone was injured.

Crowsnest Trail was re-opened to traffic around 6:30 p.m.
