Tigers overcome adversity to snap road losing skid

CRANBROOK, B.C. — Mother Nature’s wrath wasn’t enough to stop the Medicine Hat Tigers Friday night.

The Tabbies left Cranbrook with a 3-2 victory over the Kootenay ICE, despite being held up in Crowsnest Pass for two and half hours prior to puck drop. Severely fierce, blowing snow caused several accidents on Highway 3, resulting in a nine-hour bus ride into southern B.C.

Instead of playing at 7:00 p.m., the game was delayed by 90 minutes. But that didn’t seem to effect the boys in orange and black, as Medicine Hat snapped a six game road skid thanks to David Quenneville’s third period clincher.

Kootenay controlled most of the play in periods one and two, outshooting the visitors 12-6 in the first period, and 25-17 after 40 minutes of play. The Tigers dominated the final frame, outshooting the ICE 19-9 for an overall total of 36-34 on the night.

Gary Haden scored his 15th goal of the season to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Cole Clayton notched his second marker of his WHL career to tie things up at two a piece in the second period. Quenneville added to an already impressive season, scoring his 25th goal with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Alec Baer and Brad Ginnell scored for the ICE in a losing effort.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 5-1-0 against the ICE this season and have now won five of their last seven games.

Both goaltenders were stellar, with Bullion stopping 32 of 34 shots to skate away with first-star honours. Former Tiger Duncan McGovern stopped 33 of 36 shots in the loss, earning himself the second star of the night. Jaeger White had two helpers for third star honours.

The Tigers remain three points ahead of Lethbridge for top spot in the Central Division.

After a long trip back to Medicine Hat Friday, the Tigers host the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Brandon also played Friday night, falling 7-2 in Lethbridge.
