Rattlers drop thriller at the Snake Pit at ACAC opener

Feb 23, 2018 | 9:26 AM

The dream of playing at Nationals is over for the Medicine Hat College Men’s Volleyball team. But the memories of a madhouse Snake Pit Thursday night will stick with the players forever.

A rocking crowd at Medicine Hat College couldn’t push the home-side to victory against the Keyano College Huskies, falling to the Keyano Huskies in a five-set marathon thriller. The Fort McMurray based Huskies came into the match the top ranked team in the A-C-A-C with a 21-3 season record.

Medicine Hat won the first set 25-22, then took an electrifying second set 31-29.

But the visiting squad flipped the switch in the third. The Huskies took the next set 25-21, then blew by the Rattlers 25-18 in the fourth. In the final set Keyano College jumped out to an 8-4 lead and never looked back in a 15-10 clincher and moving on to the semi-finals.

The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement all game long. Despite a chance at Nationals being dashed, the Rattlers can expect to get that same kind of support as they try to close out the tournament with a couple more victories. Their next match comes Friday afternoon against The King’s University out of Edmonton at 3:00 p.m.

As for the other teams, the SAIT Trojans move on to the semi-finals after sweeping the Concordia Thunder in three sets. They play the Briercrest College Clippers, who took down NAIT in four sets. The Lethbridge Kodiaks erased a 2-0 deficit against the King’s University Eagles to move on to round two. The Kodiaks, who’re off to the semi-finals for the first time in school history, are in tough against Keyano College in the semi-finals.
