Two inmates dead at Drumheller Institution within days of each other

DRUMHELLER, AB — Correctional Service Canada is investigating the second death in three days at an Alberta prison.

The agency announced Brandon Lee Mirva, an inmate at Drumheller Institution, had passed away on Tuesday. At the time of his death, Mirva, 25, was serving a two-year sentence for charges of possession for the purposes of trafficking, failure to attend court and failure to comply with a condition of and undertaking or recognizance. He had been serving the sentence sinc eOctober 26, 2017.

It’s the second death at the facility in less than a week. On February 17, the agency announced Anatoly Eichman, 29, died while in custody at the Drumheller Institution. Eichman was serving a sentence of two years, five months and 21 days on a charge of possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition since June 2, 2017.

The causes of death were not revealed, but Correctional Service Canada says it will review the circumstances surrounding the deaths and contact the police and coroner if required.
