MEDICINE HAT, AB. – After months of speculation, the rumour of a third craft brewery opening up in Medicine Hat has been confirmed.

Travois Ale Works is located in the heart of downtown on 3rd Street. Owner Todd Wiebe and his partners are excited to be tapping into the local craft beer market.

“Craft is something different, it’s not your traditional Bud Light or Coors Light,” he said. “It’s unique flavors, it’s always got a local story.”

Wiebe said the new the brewery needed to be downtown.

“Downtown is essential,” he said. “Being in the heart of the city, we are hoping the local community will support us.”

Robin Anton, operations manager for the CCDA said the brewery was able to access $15,000 in assistance to help with renovations and encourage downtown development.

“A lot of studies have shown a city’s core determines whether a city is doing well or not,” he said. “If the city’s core is not doing well the city is not an economically profitable city.”

Terry Rock, executive director for the Alberta Small Brewers Association said in 2015 there were only 30 licensed brewers in Alberta, however today there are 73.

“Alberta’s economy is diversifying,” he said. “People are recognizing we’ve got to expand our economy beyond just oil and gas.”

Wiebe said they are expected to open in late spring.

“It’s different, it’s the kind of thing where beer is ubiquitous with Canadians,” he said. “It’s kinda like hockey or maple syrup, we love beer.”

Travois Ale Works has been an entrepreneurial dream for Wiebe and his three partners for a number of years, they are excited to get pouring.
