Police charge man after more than $100,000 worth of stolen property seized

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A 39-year-old man has been arrested and charged with firearm and stolen property offences by the Medicine Hat Police Service, after more than $100,000 worth of property was seized.

Police received information on Wednesday regarding a possible stolen vehicle in the 1100 block of First Street SW. Officers set up surveillance in the area and located a 2017 Ford F350. The truck was reported stolen out of Brooks, with a licence plate on the vehicle from a stolen vehicle out of Sylvan Lake.

Further investigation resulted in the recovery of a 2015 GMC truck, which was allegedly stolen from Redcliff, and had nine stolen rifles inside of it. Two of the rifles were loaded.

Police also recovered ammunition and stolen tools inside this truck.

The total value of the two trucks is estimated at $105,000, and the vale of the rifles is estimated at approximately $12,000.

Gerald Thurber, of no-fixed-address, has been charged with three counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm while not the holder of a valid licence, possession of break-in instruments, and possession of a controlled substance.

Thurber remains in custody, and makes his next court appearance on February 20.
