MEDICINE HAT, AB — Students at Southview Community School are assisting the Medicine Hat SPCA in taking care of a litter of puppies.

A month ago, the SPCA began taking care of a litter of five puppies found near the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Several of the puppies suffered serious injuries, which the organization believes were caused from being tossed out of a moving vehicle.

Grade 6 students at the school heard the story, and began raising money for the SPCA to help them with care for the puppies – named Trible, S’more, Chowder, Brownie and Brisket. To date, they’ve raised more than $1,700 to help the dogs.

“When a litter of puppies gets thrown from a moving vehicle, that’s not a normal thing,” said student Tyren Melnik, who helped start the fundraiser. “So we thought, okay, this is wrong. One puppy already had to die, we want to help keep the rest of the puppies in a healthy state and we want them to get good homes.”

CHAT News spoke with Melnik and Diane Schneider, a foster parent with the SPCA, about the puppies.
