MEDICINE HAT, AB — The man charged in connection with Monday morning’s standoff on Cuyler Road made his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Justin Lagasse,38, appeared in Medicine Hat provincial court on Tuesday, where the charges were officially sworn against him.

Lagasse is facing charges of uttering threats to cause bodily harm, criminal harassment, attempted break and enter, and numerous firearms related charges.

Police arrested Lagasse following a nine hour standoff in a Cuyler Road condo complex on Monday.

Officers were called to the scene at approximately 2:30 a.m. regarding calls about a man harassing and threatening a woman.

When they arrived on scene, Lagasse allegedly produced a firearm and began uttering threats.

Police told CHAT News they were able to evacuate a woman from the scene, and soon began negotiating with the suspect in the home, trying to get him to surrender the firearm and turn himself in.

Cuyler Road was closed, with a temporary shelter set up at Patterson Armoury for families who were unable to access their home while the standoff was ongoing.

Officers arrested the suspect after they deployed a chemical agent into the home, which caused the suspect to exit the home.

Lagasse remains in custody and is scheduled to return to court on March 19.
