MEDICINE HAT, AB — Girls hockey continues to take off in Medicine Hat.

In the span of two years, Medicine Hat has gone from having no girls teams to teams at every age level from Timbits to Peewee.

The peewee ranks have seen the biggest breakthrough, with the Wildcats getting ready to host Provincials next month.

“Once we found that out, we really got excited as a group of parents, and a group of coaches, and obviously, we passed that on to the girls, and they’re really excited and looking forward to be hosts to seven different zones in the entire province to come here and play us,” said Kris Schultz, head coach of the Wildcats.

Members of the Wildcats are looking forward to hosting some of the top teams in Alberta.

“I think some of the teams are going to be challenging,” said Leila Schultz. “We’ve played some of them before, and they’re hard teams, but our work ethic is really good this year, so I think we have a good chance of winning.

“I think we’re going to do really good against them, and i think we’re going to play really hard,” said Brianna Finke.

“(It’s going to take) Hard work, and working as a team,” said Taya Christie.

“I think it’s a great experience,” said Keyana Bert.

“It’s nice to see the community helps out, and it’s going to be really fun I think,” said Emmie Bauth.

Schultz says the Wildcats are working to help put girls hockey on the map on Medicine Hat.

“We understand and are respectful of the fact that we are the oldest group of girls in the city,” he said. “We love the fact that there’s a team in novice, a team in atom and a Timbit team, and we want to make sure the girls are always being a positive influence in the rink, at schools in the community and showing girls that play the game currently, and some that might want to play what it means to be a Wildcat.”

Provincials run from March 15-18.
