MEDICINE HAT, AB — The unemployment rate in Medicine Hat has once again gone up.

According to the most recent numbers released by Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate for Medicine Hat in January rose to 8.7 per cent, up from 7.5 per cent in December.

Statistics Canada cautions against month-to-month comparisons of the Medicine Hat unemployment rate, due to the small sample size.

Nationally, Statistics Canada reported 88,000 thousand jobs – all of them part time- were lost in January, pushing the unemployment rate for the country up to 5.9 per cent., up from 5.7 per cent last month.

It’s the largest unemployment decline in a single month since 2009.

Alberta’s unemployment rate was at 7 per cent, unchanged from December 2017.
