Bandits run win streak to eight with 2-1 win in Camrose

CAMROSE, AB – Mitch Benson (Windsor, ON) made 26 saves on 27 shots as the Brooks Bandits (35-11-1) downed the Camrose Kodiaks (16-19-11) by a 2-1 score on Saturday night at Encana Arena.

The game’s three goals were all scored in the first period, with stellar goaltending down the stretch by Benson and Camrose goalie Luke Lush leading to a scoreless final 40 minutes.

Brooks broke through early in the game on the power play when Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, B.C.) stuffed home a rebound chance from the top of the crease at the 10:05 mark.

The Bandits’ second power play of the game didn’t go nearly as well, as Peter Kope blasted in a shorthanded goal from the right circle at 14:15 to tie the game 1-1.

But in the final minute, the Bandits scored what would turn out to be the game-winner when captain Dennis Cesana (Providence, RI) fired a pass from the right point to Conner Jean (Oakland, MI) at the left side of the net, who spun and fired home a quick wrist shot for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season.

The Bandits outshot the Kodiaks 38-27 in the game and improved their record on the season series to 4-1. They remain 9 points behind Okotoks for first place in the AJHL South Division but are 22 points ahead of Drumheller for second.

Brooks will return home next weekend for dual dates with North division foes, beginning with the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Friday night, and followed by the Whitecourt Wolverines on Saturday night in the team’s annual Charity Jersey Night, benefitting the Canadian Mental Health Association. Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7:00 PM with tickets available online at tickets.brooksbandits.ca.
