Registration open for Jam Pail Bonspiel

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Registration is now open for one of the city’s longest running traditions next month.

The 54th annual Jam Pail Bonspiel returns to the Kinplex on Feb. 21 and 22.

The event sees the Kinplex converted into 13 curling rinks, with more than 400 students from Grades 3-6 participating. The event was originally created to provide students with an activity during a Teacher’s Convention that week.

Grades 3 and 4 students play on Feb. 21, while Grades 5 and 6 play on the 22nd. The open category, which doesn’t have an age limit, is also available on the 22nd, giving families an opportunity to play the game together, or for people to try out the bonspiel. Teams in the open category need at least one adult on the team.

“Over the years, the bonspiel has evolved into a family-oriented event with parents as scorekeepers/supervisors to the participating students,” says Natalie Sauer, superintendent of recreation and a former Jam Pail Bonspiel participant, in a statement. “Many parents of our current curlers played when they were students and I believe we are now working on third generation participants. What better way to enjoy the event than to let them all on the ice together.”

Registration forms are available at www.medicinehat.ca/jampailbonspiel and are due by Monday, February 5.

The Jam Pail Bonspiel is organized by the City of Medicine Hat, in partnership with members of the Medicine Hat Curling Club and the local school divisions.
