TORONTO — Reactions continued to pour in Thursday following the news that Patrick Brown has stepped down as Ontario’s Opposition leader amid allegations of sexual misconduct by two women. Here are some of the comments:

“As I’ve said many times, it’s extremely important that we make absolutely clear that sexual harassment, sexual assault is unacceptable. We take these allegations extremely seriously whenever they come up. Obviously, my thoughts turn immediately to the women who came forward knowing how difficult it can be, to salute them for their courage, and their leadership. I certainly hope their example will resonate and that the support of their friends, their families and the community at large remains with them.” — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

“I did watch the story last night and I would say to those young women that they were very brave and I acknowledge that it was very courageous for them to step forward. I would also say to them that I hope that they will find the supports that they need now … they have been carrying this experience for years and these is an impact to that and I don’t know what the aftermath will be for them.” — Premier Kathleen Wynne.

“Our thoughts are with the brave women who have had the courage to speak out about their experiences. We believe survivors and offer all survivors our unwavering support. The allegations against Patrick Brown are serious and deeply disturbing…” — Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh

“This morning, I’m reflecting on how now, more than ever, we need more women in politics. We need women to run, vote and lead.” — Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath

“One thing which is changing, as well it should be, is that victims of assault and harassment are increasingly coming forward and making their voices heard, knowing that diligent investigation and accountability will follow. Political leaders have a responsibility to set a high standard, both through their words and their actions, and we must all state loudly that this type of behaviour is never OK.”— Toronto Mayor John Tory

“The Ontario PC caucus unequivocally upholds the principle that a safe and respectful society is what we expect and deserve. We need to move forward to eradicate sexual violence and harassment across the province. — Conservative MPP Victor Fedeli
