MEDICINE HAT, AB — The K9 Unit was called in to help apprehend a man allegedly trying to evade police Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, they received reports of a 1990 Chevrolet truck which was stolen from the Medicine Hat Mall between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. At approximately noon, the vehicle was seen in the Southridge area. Police attempted a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly fled from police.

A containment zone was set up in the south end of the city. The truck came up to a police check point, where a spike belt was deployed. The driver tried to avoid the spike belt, and spun into a ditch on South Boundary Road.

The driver continued to try and exit the ditch with the truck while police ordered him to stop and turn himself over to police.

Police Service Dog Flint was deployed and made contact with the suspect, ending his attempts to flee.

An adult man from Calgary is in custody awaiting a bail hearing on charges of possession of stolen property, evade police, dangerous driving, possession of break-in tools and possession of identity documents belonging to another person. The man will be named once charges are sworn against him.
