MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat boxing tradition is returning with a stacked card this weekend.

The 14th Annual Nieman/Page Memorial Boxing Card, hosted by the Medicine Hat Boxing Club, takes over the Clarion Hotel Saturday and Sunday, with one or the largest roster of fights in the event’s history.

Kerry Fahlman, head coach at the Medicine Hat Boxing Club, says approximately 90 boxers from across Western Canada will be making the trip into Medicine Hat for the fight weekend.

“We’re starting to build our team in Alberta for the Canada Winter Games in 2019,” he said, noting the games are being hosted in Red Deer. “I invited B.C. to bring out their Canada Winter Games prospects team to match against our Alberta prospects, and in the process of it, they ended up bringing more.

“There’s probably 25 boxers coming from B.C.”

Fahlman estimates 75 per cent of the boxers in the tournament are provincial champions in their home provinces. In total, 23 bouts are scheduled for Saturday, with another 22 fights scheduled on Sunday.

Saturday’s card gets underway at 7 p.m., while Sunday’s fights start at noon.

Tickets are available at the door for $20, or $30 for the two days.
