Canadian Finals Rodeo could be moving to Red Deer

RED DEER, AB. – The Canadian Finals Rodeo could be moving to Red Deer.

The Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce and Westerner Park have scheduled a “major announcement” for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Enmax Centrium.

Officials from both organizations have to comment on the nature of the announcement, but it is expected that they will announce the success of their bid to bring the CFR to Red Deer.

Specific details of the announcement are not yet known. The joint Chamber/Westerner proposal sought to bring the rodeo to Red Deer for 10 years starting in 2018. The Enmax Centrium would host the rodeo each November prior to AgriTrade, according to the bid.

Also included in the proposal was the creation of a new “Rising Stars of Rodeo” to be hosted each August to promote up and coming rodeo talent.

The CFR has been held in Edmonton for its entire 44-year year history. But the event found itself in need of a new home with the closure of Northlands Coliseum and the decision by the Oilers Entertainment group not to host the Rodeo at Rogers Place.

A group from Saskatoon also submitted a bid to host the rodeo in that city.
