MEDICINE HAT, AB — A man arrested and charged in connection with a break and enter at a car dealership on New Year’s Day has been granted bail.

Robert Handy, 27, appeared in Medicine Hat provincial court on Wednesday, where he was released on $2,500 cash bail with multiple conditions.

The Red Deer man was arrested on New Year’s Day. Police were investigating reports of a stolen Honda Civic in the morning, when they were alerted a vehicle had crashed through the doors of Davis GMC Buick.

The driver of the car fled the scene, and police were unable to locate a suspect.

Later in the morning, police attempted to stop a stolen Ford F-350 that was driving erratically, but was called off due to concerns for public safety.

The truck was located by officers later in the morning, and was stopped due to a vehicle malfunction. Police arrested the driver without incident.

Handy was charged with break and enter, theft, possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, possession of break and enter tools, and three counts of breach of probation.

Handy’s conditions include reporting to police twice a week, abstaining from drugs and alcohol, and living under a curfew with family in Red Deer.

His next court appearance is January 24.
