MEDICINE HAT, AB – Opening day action at the 2018 Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts wrapped up with the first evening draws of the tournament.

Facing off in draw two were Olympic runner-up Chelsea Carey (1-0) taking on the Jodi Marthaller (1-1) rink out of Lethbridge.

Team Carey started strong with two points scored in the first end before adding another in the third to hold a 3-0 lead.

Marthaller was able to get on the score sheet in the fourth end with a single, but Carey answered back with a big three-spot to jump ahead 6-1.

With Carey sitting two in the sixth, Marthaller attempted a draw but came up short with teams exchanging handshakes in an 8-1 win for the Carey rink.

The Calgarian said after getting adjusted to the Medicine Hat Curling Club ice in their first game, they settled into the match.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” said Carey. “Obviously, they’re a really good team, they’ve played a game on the ice and we haven’t yet. So, it was a little bit of figuring it out for us. We kept it fairly simple early on to try to get our heads around the speeds and what it was going to do.”

Carey added getting three in the fifth end was extra sweet after missing her first shot.

“I didn’t throw my first rock great,” she said. “It over-curled on us and it ended up in a pretty bad spot, so I really wanted to make the second one and luckily we were able to pull it off.”

It’s the first loss of the tournament for the Marthaller rink, who had previously beaten the Geri-Lynn Ramsay rink 10-6 in the morning draw.

Marthaller said the Carey rink really never gave them a chance to get back into the game.

“We just didn’t make enough shots to be honest,” said Marthaller. “We came out a little flat and we missed some key shots early on, and they just kept putting the pressure on.”

As for the other Draw Two results on Wednesday night, the Val Sweeting rink (1-0) posted a big fifth end with four points en-route to an 8-1 win over the Marla Sherrer rink (1-1) in six ends.

Grande Prairie’s Casey Scheidegger (1-0) rink staved off a late comeback from the Nadine Scotland (1-1) rink to win her opener 7-5 in nine ends.

And, it was defending champion Shannon Kleibrink (2-0) scoring points in the ninth and tenth ends to take home a 6-4 win over the Laura Crocker rink.

Two matches in the ‘A’ bracket on Thursday morning, as Team Scheidegger battles Team Sweeting, while Team Kleibrink looks to move to 3-0 against Team Carey.

Draw three gets underway at the Medicine Hat Curling Club at 9:00 am.
